Catalan public holiday calendar: Christmas market stall in Barcelona with festive lights

Public Holidays in Catalonia 2026 and 2027: Full Calendar and Dates

Planning a trip to Catalonia around a public holiday? Smart move — and a slightly confusing one, because Catalonia counts fourteen public holidays a year: the twelve national Spanish holidays plus two of its own, and on top of that every city and town adds two local days of its own. Here is the full official calendar for 2026, the holidays still to come this year, and the 2027 dates you can already plan around.

Table

Public holidays in Catalonia 2026 (official calendar)

The 2026 work calendar was set by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Order EMT/66/2025). These are the fourteen dates:

  • Thursday 1 January — New Year's Day (Any Nou)
  • Tuesday 6 January — Epiphany / Three Kings' Day (Els Reis)
  • Friday 3 April — Good Friday (Divendres Sant)
  • Monday 6 April — Easter Monday (Dilluns de Pasqua) — Catalonia-specific
  • Friday 1 May — Labour Day
  • Wednesday 24 June — Sant Joan (St John's Day) — Catalonia-specific
  • Saturday 15 August — Assumption of Mary
  • Friday 11 September — National Day of Catalonia (La Diada) — Catalonia-specific
  • Monday 12 October — National Day of Spain
  • Sunday 1 November — All Saints' Day (Tots Sants)
  • Sunday 6 December — Constitution Day (falls on a Sunday)
  • Tuesday 8 December — Immaculate Conception (La Immaculada)
  • Friday 25 December — Christmas Day (Nadal)
  • Saturday 26 December — Sant Esteve (St Stephen's Day) — Catalonia-specific

Two dates land on Sundays in 2026 (1 November and 6 December), so the practical count is twelve days off. On the plus side, 2026 is generous with Fridays and Mondays — eight long weekends.

Holidays still to come in 2026

If you are reading this mid-year, these are the dates left on the 2026 calendar:

  • Monday 12 October — National Day of Spain
  • Sunday 1 November — All Saints' Day
  • Sunday 6 December — Constitution Day
  • Tuesday 8 December — Immaculate Conception
  • Friday 25 December — Christmas Day
  • Saturday 26 December — Sant Esteve, the family day after Christmas

Early December is a lovely moment to visit: the Christmas markets are open — from Barcelona's Fira de Santa Llúcia to the fir fair in Espinelves — and the season's two mascots, the Caga Tió and the caganer, are everywhere.

Barcelona's local holidays (and everyone else's)

On top of the general calendar, every municipality adds two local days. In Barcelona city these are La Mercè (24 September) — the city's biggest street festival — and Whit Monday (Pasqua Granada). Elsewhere, each town honours its own patron saint, which means that travelling through Catalonia you are rarely far from a festa major. One peculiarity: in the Aran valley the calendar differs slightly, with a local day replacing Sant Esteve.

What actually closes on a public holiday

Public offices and banks close everywhere. Supermarkets and most shops close too, though convenience stores and many pharmacies keep rotating holiday openings. Museums and monuments vary: some close on 25 December, 1 January and 6 January but open on other holidays, often with special programmes — check before you go. Restaurants and bars, especially in tourist areas, tend to stay open and busy: Christmas Day itself is a classic family restaurant day in Catalonia.

Public holidays in Catalonia — FAQ

How many public holidays does Catalonia have?

Fourteen per year: twelve common with the rest of Spain plus two Catalan ones — traditionally Easter Monday, Sant Joan, the Diada (11 September) and Sant Esteve are the dates that make the Catalan calendar its own — plus two local holidays chosen by each municipality.

What is the next public holiday in Catalonia?

From mid-October, the next ones are 1 November (All Saints), 8 December (Immaculate Conception) and then the Christmas run: 25 and 26 December, with Sant Esteve being the distinctly Catalan family day.

What is Sant Esteve?

St Stephen's Day, 26 December, is a holiday specific to Catalonia (and the Balearic Islands). Families gather again for a second Christmas meal — often cannelloni made with the leftovers from Christmas Day — and children get to spend the day with the new toys.

Are shops and museums open on public holidays?

Most shops close, though tourist-area stores and rotating pharmacies open. Museums differ: many stay open on holidays except 25 December, 1 January and 6 January. Always check the specific museum's calendar.
