Introduction

The majestic red deer, one of the largest mammals in Catalonia, offers a spectacular natural phenomenon each year—its mating season, known as the "brama del cérvol" or deer rut. This captivating event draws both nature enthusiasts and curious onlookers looking to witness and hear the powerful calls of male deer as they compete for the attention of females. In this article, we explore where and when you can experience this awe-inspiring spectacle in different parts of Catalonia.

Where to Experience the Deer Rut

Alt Pirineu Natural Park and Alt Pallars Hunting Reserve

Every year, three free information points are set up, equipped with informants and optical material to guide visitors. These points are operational from dawn until 11 AM and from 5 PM until nightfall on all weekends in September and on October 5, 6, 12, and 13.

  • Ares (Port de la Bonaigua)
  • Alós d'Isil
  • Cerbi

Certified guides from the Alt Pirineu Natural Park offer exclusive and small-group tours to let visitors experience the deer rut intensely and safely.

Boumort Hunting Reserve (Pallars Jussà and Pallars Sobirà)

Boumort Hunting Reserve is another prime location to observe the deer rut. This year, in addition to the usual information point at Mirador de Fites, a new center has been added at Centre de la Pessonada.

  • Mirador de Fites (Baix Pallars): Open on September 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, and 29, and October 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, and 20 from 8 AM to 8 PM.
  • Centre de la Pessonada (Conca de Dalt): Open from late August to late October. Besides support and information, the center features an exhibition and an audiovisual presentation about Boumort Hunting Reserve and other attractions around Pessonada.

Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park and Cadí Hunting Reserve (Berguedà)

This area offers a free guiding service during the deer rut, where environmental educators provide visitors with knowledge, pedagogical material, and optical tools to enjoy this natural phenomenon with respect for the animals and their environment. A third observation point has been added in Comariola this year.

Ripollès Region

The western part of Ripollès has seen a significant increase in the deer population in recent years, making deer observation easier. The environmental education entity CEA Alt Ter organizes the "Dinner Among Deer" event in Gombrèn, which includes guiding, observation, and listening to the deer, followed by a meal featuring local products. This year, the event is scheduled for September 27.

Additionally, DEPANA organizes an excursion on October 5 to explore the flora of the Rasos de Tubau area and listen to the deer rut in the evening.

Tips for Enjoying the Deer Rut

  • Prioritize designated observation points and organized activities with accredited guides or entities.
  • Always maintain maximum silence and do not interfere with the animals' activities.
  • Behave respectfully and do not litter.
  • Wear warm clothing, appropriate footwear, and bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope.
  • Stick to main public access tracks, respect regulations and signage, and park in areas that do not obstruct access to tracks or agricultural properties.
  • It is strictly forbidden to disturb the animals or approach them without administrative authorization.
  • Note: Hunting deer during the rut is permitted in certain areas for better management, subject to administrative regulation.

Summary

Observing the deer rut is an extraordinary experience that offers a deep connection to nature. Whether you visit the information points in Alt Pirineu, the Boumort Hunting Reserve, the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, or the western part of Ripollès, each location provides unique opportunities to witness this natural spectacle. Ensure you follow the guidelines to enjoy this experience respectfully and responsibly. Happy wildlife watching!
